About the Artist |
|
Charlie and Rolfe Faust are two of San Diego, California’s most popular and well-known artists. They are best recognized for their superb bas-relief sandcast sculptures, drawings, and watercolors. Charlie, a native San Diegan, began drawing and painting seriously while confined to a hospital bed during WWII. He was a four engine bomber (B-24) pilot in the Army Air Corps. Charlie studied architecture and industrial design at San Diego State University and graduated in 1953 with a secondary teaching credential and a distinction in art. In 1974, his alma mater honored his work with the Distinguished Alumni Award. As Architectural Design Director for the Zoological Society of San Diego since 1957, he was world renowned for his unique exhibit designs and for his role as head project designer for the San Diego Wild Animal Park. His interest in wildlife is reflected in many of his works. In 1969, Charlie opened his sandcast studio in Ocean Beach, California, producing sandcasts of all shapes, sizes, and subject matter and perfected that art form. In 1974, Charlie was joined by his son Rolfe, and for the next 26 years they produced a staggering body of work that includes large wall-mounted casts, smaller works, sculptures, and prints. Sadly, Charlie died in 2000, leaving Rolfe to continue their legacy in a newly refurbished studio. America's best loved sandcast artist continues to create works that have made them number one. With over thirty-seven years of experience in unique architectural sandcasts, there is only one name to remember – Faust. |
